CONSERVATION IMPACT
Protecting Livelihoods. Conserving Wildlife
Across the mountainous regions of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, livestock is often the primary source of income for rural families. However, livestock losses caused by snow leopards and common leopards create significant financial hardship for herders. In many cases, these losses lead to retaliatory killings, posing a serious threat to some of Pakistan's most vulnerable wildlife species.
To address this challenge, a pioneering partnership with WWF-Pakistan introduced a community-based livestock insurance programme that protects both people and nature. The initiative provides financial compensation to livestock owners when animals are lost due to verified predator attacks, reducing the economic burden on families while removing one of the key drivers of human–wildlife conflict.
Rather than viewing conservation and livelihoods as competing priorities, the programme demonstrates how insurance can create shared value by supporting communities and protecting biodiversity simultaneously. By improving financial resilience, encouraging coexistence, and promoting conservation awareness, the initiative contributes to healthier ecosystems and more sustainable rural livelihoods.
Key Outcomes
- Protects livestock owners against financial losses from predator attacks.
- Supports the conservation of endangered snow leopards and common leopards.
- Reduces retaliatory killings through timely financial protection.
- Strengthens livelihoods in remote communities across Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
- Demonstrates how insurance can contribute to biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
